I am a long-standing friend of the author and was honoured to be asked to design and illustrate the cover of his book, Magster and the Light of the Ladybird. It was exciting for me to see a friend following their passion and writing their first book, having previously been a successful session guitarist and electronic music producer, amongst other things. It was no surprise that a great artist like him would write a lovely book. It is a wonderful story with charming characters which made it very engaging to work on.

I worked up some sketches, playing with composition and exploring Kit's vision for his book. Once we had settled on a composition I produced a more refined sketch before taking that into Photoshop for digital painting. The 'Light of the Ladybird' is a bracelet that features in the story. I actually created a 3D model of this to use as a reference, as well as the harnesses worn by the main characters. It's so much fun to be an artist in this day and age with so many tools at our fingertips and mixing in tools and techniques to arrive at at final result.

Kit always intended Magster to be a series of books, so the Magster logo was designed to be a strong, unifying banner under which the series could develop.
